I don't normally post much personal information about my children on anything relating to my business. I was forwarded an article in the NY Post today by numerous people. I have to say that I am horrified on both a professional and a personal level by what I have read. I am posting my full response to both the journalist and the editor of the NY Post here for you to read after you read this article:

My Response, as a mom of a special needs child and a Disney travel specialist.

I have read your article numerous times over the past few hours and have tried to figure out how to word what I am going to say here quite a few times in my head. It is an understatement to say that I am utterly disgusted by what I have read. Not only disgusted by the parents that have done this but by the agency that has exploited their handicapped workers. I have been a huge fan of Disney since I was a young child. I vacationed in Disney World as a child, teenager, young adult, married woman, mom of 1, mom of 2 and now as a mom of 3. For the past 4 years I have also been traveling as the mom of a special needs child. My 7 year old son has special needs. He is on the autism spectrum, he has mobility issues, he fatigues faster than some infants, he has sensory issues and he has brain cancer. He was diagnosed in September 2008 with unclassifiable tumors coating his brain and spine. It is because of my love for Disney and their exceptional guest service that I became a Disney Vacation Specialist with Fairytale Journeys Travel Agency about a year ago.

As someone who has utilized the Guest Assistance policies at numerous amusement parks since my son's diagnosis I am horrified by both the families and 'tour company'/companies that are partaking in this behavior. The families should be grateful that their children and loved ones are able to stand on a line and experience all that these theme parks have to offer! They should spend a day in a Children's Hospital; on an oncology ward; with a disabled veteran or in a special needs school. The children that are 'waiting one minute to get on "It's A Small World"' are being taught that it's ok to exploit people with special needs to get ahead. It's teaching my children that, to some people, my son would be seen as a way to 'skip to the front of the line'. It's disgusting and sad. I hope that this article helps all amusement parks start to work on banning tour companies that use their Guest Assistance policies as a way to get paying clients to the front of the line and ensure that the policies set in place are used for legitimate special needs circumstances.

At Disney Parks, a Bracelet Meant to Build Loyalty (and Sales)

ORLANDO, Fla. — Imagine Walt Disney World with no entry turnstiles. Cash? Passé: Visitors would wear rubber bracelets encoded with credit card information, snapping up corn dogs and Mickey Mouse ears with a tap of the wrist. Smartphone alerts would signal when it is time to ride Space Mountain without standing in line.

Fantasyland? Hardly. It happens starting this spring.

Disney in the coming months plans to begin introducing a vacation management system called MyMagic+ that will drastically change the way Disney World visitors — some 30 million people a year — do just about everything.

The initiative is part of a broader effort, estimated by analysts to cost between $800 million and $1 billion, to make visiting Disney parks less daunting and more amenable to modern consumer behavior. Disney is betting that happier guests will spend more money.

“If we can enhance the experience, more people will spend more of their leisure time with us,” said Thomas O. Staggs, chairman of Disney Parks and Resorts.

The ambitious plan moves Disney deeper into the hotly debated terrain of personal data collection. Like most major companies, Disney wants to have as much information about its customers’ preferences as it can get, so it can appeal to them more efficiently. The company already collects data to use in future sales campaigns, but parts of MyMagic+ will allow Disney for the first time to track guest behavior in minute detail.

Did you buy a balloon? What attractions did you ride and when? Did you shake Goofy’s hand, but snub Snow White? If you fully use MyMagic+, databases will be watching, allowing Disney to refine its offerings and customize its marketing messages.

Disney is aware of potential privacy concerns, especially regarding children. The plan, which comes as the federal government is trying to strengthen online privacy protections, could be troublesome for a company that some consumers worry is already too controlling.

But Disney has decided that MyMagic+ is essential. The company must aggressively weave new technology into its parks — without damaging the sense of nostalgia on which the experience depends — or risk becoming irrelevant to future generations, Mr. Staggs said. From a business perspective, he added, MyMagic+ could be “transformational.”

Aside from benefiting Disney’s bottom line, the initiative could alter the global theme parks business. Disney is not the first vacation company to use wristbands equipped with radio frequency identification, or RFID, chips. Great Wolf Resorts, an operator of 11 water parks in North America, has been using them since 2006. But Disney’s global parks operation, which has an estimated 121.4 million admissions a year and generates $12.9 billion in revenue, is so huge that it can greatly influence consumer behavior.

“When Disney makes a move, it moves the culture,” said Steve Brown, chief operating officer for Lo-Q, a British company that provides line management and ticketing systems for theme parks and zoos.

Disney World guests currently plod through entrance turnstiles, redeeming paper tickets, and then decide what to ride; food and merchandise are bought with cash or credit cards. (Disney hotel key cards can also be used to charge items.) People race to FastPass kiosks, which dispense a limited number of free line-skipping tickets. But gridlock quickly sets in and most people wait. And wait.

In contrast, MyMagic+ will allow users of a new Web site and app — called My Disney Experience — to preselect three FastPasses before they leave home for rides or V.I.P. seating for parades, fireworks and character meet-and-greets. Orlando-bound guests can also preregister for RFID bracelets. These so-called MagicBands will function as room key, park ticket, FastPass and credit card.

MagicBands can also be encoded with all sorts of personal details, allowing for more personalized interaction with Disney employees. Before, the employee playing Cinderella could say hello only in a general way. Now — if parents opt in — hidden sensors will read MagicBand data, providing information needed for a personalized greeting: “Hi, Angie,” the character might say without prompting. “I understand it’s your birthday.”

The data will also be used to make waiting areas for rides (“scene ones” in Disney parlance) less of a drag. A new Magic Kingdom ride called Under the Sea, for instance, features a robotic version of Scuttle the sea gull from “The Little Mermaid” that will be able to chitchat with MagicBand wearers.

“We want to take experiences that are more passive and make them as interactive as possible — moving from, ‘Cool, look at that talking bird,’ to ‘Wow, amazing, that bird is talking directly to me,’ ” said Bruce Vaughn, chief creative executive for Walt Disney Imagineering.

Guests will not be forced to use the MagicBand system, and people who do try it will decide how much information to share. An online options menu, for instance, will offer various controls: Do you want park employees to know your name? Do you want Disney to send you special offers when you get home? What about during your stay?

“I may walk in and feel good about giving information about myself and my wife, but maybe we don’t want to give much about the children,” Mr. Staggs said. Still, once using the MagicBand, even if selecting the most restrictive settings, Disney sensors will gather general information about how the visitor uses the park.

Rumors about MyMagic+ have been circulating on Disney fan blogs for months and offer a window into the likely debate over the service.

“Although I know this type of technology is making its way into every facet of life, it still makes me feel a bit creeped out,” wrote Jayne Townsley on StitchKingdom.com.

Pam Falcioni, another StitchKingdom user, had the opposite response. “I think it sounds awesome,” she wrote, adding, “As far as ‘Big Brother’ watching over us as we wander the parks, anyone worried about ‘real’ privacy wouldn’t be wandering around a theme park full of security cameras.”

The logistical challenges involved in pulling this off are extensive. Disney has 60,000 employees here and many must be retrained to use new technology. Already, Disney has installed free Wi-Fi at Disney World, a 40-square-mile area, so smartphone users can access the My Disney Experience app more readily. And all of the new procedures must be communicated to Super Bowl-size crowds daily.

What happens if your MagicBand is lost or stolen? Park employees will be trained to deactivate them or guests can use the My Disney Experience app, a Disney spokeswoman said. As a safety precaution, Disney will also require guests to enter a PIN when using the wristbands to make purchases of $50 or more. “The bands themselves will contain no personal identifiable information,” Mr. Staggs said.

Mr. Staggs said Disney’s board decided to move ahead with the technology upgrades in February 2011 only after identifying multiple ways in which the initiative could expand profits. “If Disney can drive more value from existing infrastructure by layering on technology, that is extremely powerful,” said Mr. Brown of Lo-Q. “They can’t just compete by building new rides; it’s already a theme-park arms race out there.”

Disney expects MagicBands to turn into a big business in and of themselves; the company plans to introduce collectible sets of MagicBand accessories and charms.

Prodding guests to do more advance planning, combined with the tracking of guests as they roam the parks, will help Disney manage its work force more efficiently. More advance planning will also help lock visitors into Disney once they arrive in Orlando, discouraging people, for instance, from making impromptu visits to Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Some cosmetic changes to the parks are included in the initiative’s cost. For instance, eventually guests will no longer enter the parks through turnstiles. Instead, they will tap their MagicBand on a post. Mr. Staggs explained that research indicated that guests — particularly mothers with strollers — viewed the turnstiles as an unpleasant barrier. “Small, subtle things can make a big difference,” Mr. Staggs said.

Sunday Sweets Disney Style

When we head to Disney World we always make it a point to head to Downtown Disney Marketplace! As much as we love the atmosphere of a shopping center dedicated practically JUST to Disney merchandise, there's the matter of Goofy's Candy Co. We just can't visit WDW without stopping here for a treat!

Really... where else can you get a treat coated in ANYTHING you want like this?!?!?!

And really... can you find cuter candy apples ANYWHERE?!?!?!

Streetmosphere

In New York City we have subway singers and Naked Cowboys... in Disney we have STREETMOSPHERE!! :) They're street performers that enhance the atmosphere in the parks. This would be how the term streetmosphere was born :) 

 These performers are sometimes very funny, sometimes very groan-worthy and sometimes so entertaining you find yourself really stopping for a while just to watch! Check out some examples of the streetmosphere found in various parks... there's even a performer from the Boardwalk in the pics too! :)

The Walt Disney World Monorail System!

Did you know:

~~The Disney World Monorail System is the most heavily used monorail system in the world.

~~The Walt Disney World Monorail operates over a span of 14.7 miles (23.7 km), with around 50 million Disney guests traveling on the monorail each year

~~The monorail system is one of the most expensive rides at Disney

World. The double monorail tracks cost 1 million dollars a mile! When Disney bought the monorail trains years ago,

they cost 11 million each, and there are 7 of these original monorails. That's one expensive ride!

~~There are 12 monorail trains at Walt Disney World which start

circulating around at 5 am. 

~~These 12 trains are identified by their colors. The colors currently in use are: Red, Coral, Orange, Gold, Yellow, Teal, Lime, Green, Blue, Silver, Black and Peach

~~Purple and Pink monorails are currently retired!!

~~The track that spans from the TTC to Epcot Center is

at an average altitude of 21 feet.

~~The monorail's top speed is 55 mph, however they cruise at 40 mph.

~~Did you know that Space and Big Thunder Mountain only move at 26 mph?? I know, I know... that's really slow for a roller coaster. Do you know what this means for the Disney World Monorail?? This means that it was the fastest ride in Disney World until Test Track was installed in Epcot!! 

~~Prior to departure when the pilot closes the doors, an announcement asks guests to "Please stand clear of the doors. Por favor manténganse alejado de las puertas." This is one of the most known phrases around the Disney World Resort!!

Magical Express... is it as MAGICAL as it sounds?

When you book a Disney World Vacation you have the option of adding ground transportation to your reservation. You can book a rental car though Disney, you can book a shuttle from the airport to Disney property or you can use Disney's COMPLIMENTARY Magical Express. This Magical Express Service provides door to door bus round trip transportation between Orlando International Airport & select resorts on Disney Property. In the weeks before your Disney World Vacation you will receive a booklet like this:

In it will be all sorts of information including a map of MCO (Orlando International Airport) so you know where to go when you land!!

Information on what you should be doing before you leave home, your flight information and arrival bus vouchers will also be included in the book along with return flight information. DO NOT REMOVE THESE FROM THE BOOKLET!!! You will also be receiving luggage tags that look like this:

Once you get the Magical Express documents open the envelope and ensure everything is correct. Don't lose this booklet! You will need it to board a Magical Express bus at the airport. :) 

Upon landing at Orlando International Airport, skip baggage claim and proceed to the Disney's Magical Express Welcome Center in the Main Terminal Building, B side, Level 1. If you have attached your Disney's Magical Express luggage tags to any of your checked bags... have no fear... Magical Express service will collect your luggage and deliver it directly to your Walt Disney World hotel room within 3 hours after you check in at the resort! Luggage delivery service provided by Disney's Magical Express is available for flights arriving between 5:00 am and 10:00 pm daily. For airport arrivals after 10:00 pm, Guests may collect their luggage at Baggage Claim and transport it with them on the motorcoach. If you're not sure you want to wait that long or if you are worried about your bags you can skip putting the luggage tags on your checked bags and retrieve them from Baggage Claim yourself and transport them to the bus. There's room in the luggage hold compartments of the buses for your bags, strollers, car seats... don't worry... everything can fit on the bus without cramming you in your seats! 


A note for any International Disney Guests flying into Orlando International Airport... you must follow the U.S. Customs and Border Protection process and claim your luggage after disembarking the plane. After completing the process, proceed to the Disney's Magical Express Welcome Center in the Main Terminal Building, B side, Level 1. Disney's Magical Express service will recollect your luggage and deliver it directly to your Walt Disney World hotel room within 4 hours after you check in at the resort. Luggage delivery service provided by Disney's Magical Express is available for flights arriving between 5:00 am and 10:00 pm daily. For airport arrivals after 10:00 pm, Guests may collect their luggage at Baggage Claim and transport it with them on the motorcoach. :) Just wanted to make sure any of our international readers took note of that!! :)

Your ride is full of fun! Your Disney Vacation has officially begun when you step onto your bus! From the Mickey head upholstered seats to the GPS played video that you watch full of Disney information and ideas starring Mickey and friends it's a great start to your trip! 

Once you reach your Resort Destination you will hop off the bus into your resort! Don't forget to collect any baggage that you had placed underneath in the luggage compartment! :)

As your Disney vacation comes to a close, you will receive an envelope like this hanging on your doorknob:

It will include a letter with your Disney's Magical Express information for your departure day. Your bus typically picks you up at your resort 3 hours prior to your flight departure time. International guests, you get picked up about 4 hours before your departure time!! Bring this letter with you to the bus stop! :)

Another feature that Disney World is now offering is airline check in for many airlines right at your resort if you're flying domestically on select airlines!! You will receive your return boarding pass and check luggage at your Walt Disney World hotel, bypassing airport check-in completely. All you have to do is visit the Resort Airline Check-In Desk located at your Walt Disney World resort up to 3 hours prior to your flight departure time. Yes, you can check your luggage at the resort as well up to a certain time of day! A valid government issued photo I.D. and your hotel room key are required to check in at your resort. I used both Disney's Magical Express and Disney's Airline Resort Check-In and I loved it! It was so nice to get to the airport, get on a bus and have my vacation start the minute I sat down!! :) The whole process was seamless and it was so nice not to have to read a map to get somewhere or pay $50 to share a shuttle bus with other people!! 

I will admit, I have had luggage lost by an airline a couple of times so I'm one of those nervous people who doesn't use the Magical Express luggage tags. I did collect my own bag and brought it with me to the bus. I know, some of you will think I'm crazy but at least I'm not so crazy that I packed my bag like this...

LOL Yep, this is an actual bag wrapped in Saran Wrap coming off of the flight into Orlando. It's actually one of 3 bags wrapped just like it! I couldn't not get a picture... no matter how much fun my husband makes of me that I'd trust anything Disney does so how could I not just check my bags... Honey, have no fear... I'm NOT this worried about my luggage!! :)

Please remember, in order to qualify for the free dining offer, your must check in on one of the available dates. Your stay can extend outside of the available dates and you will still receive the free dining for your entire stay. For example, you can check in on November 15th and stay through November 22nd and still receive the Free Dining Offer for your entire stay.  

Also remember, availability is extremely limited, and not all resorts may be available. 

Guests staying at a Disney World Value resort will receive the Quick Service Dining Plan for free. The Walt Disney World value resorts include All-Star Sports, All-Star Music, All-Star Movies, Pop Century and Art of Animation. Art of Animation Standard Little Mermaid rooms are NOT included in this Free Dining Offer. Guests do have the option to upgrade to either the Disney Dining plan or the Deluxe Disney Dining plan by paying the price difference.

Guests staying at a Disney World Moderate, Deluxe or Deluxe Villa resort will receive the Disney Dining Plan included for free. Disney World guests at moderate, deluxe and villa resorts will also have the option to book the Free Disney Dining Plan, and upgrade to the Disney Deluxe Dining for the normal price difference.

Availability is extremely limited, and vacations must be booked by September 29, 2012. All suites, campsites and 3 bedroom villas have been excluded from this offer, as well as the standard Little Mermaid rooms the new Art of Animation Resort. All other Disney resorts, including the family suites at All-Star Music and Art of Animation, as well as the other value resorts are included in the offer. 

There are a few requirements to book your stay with this offer:

• Three night minimum stay required
• Maximum stay of 14 nights is allowed per reservation
• You must also purchase a minimum 2 day basic park pass per person per reservation to qualify.
• As always, all members of the traveling party in the same room MUST be booking the same vacation tickets and dining options
